DO DOGS LIKE HUGS? We often have clients mention their puppy or dog is bitey, nippy and jumpy with children. Often this occurs due to well-meaning, but inappropriate affection from children. Most dogs do not actually enjoy hugs, contrary to what humans believe. Hugging dogs frequently leads to bites, and there are plenty of alternatives that are more safe and enjoyable for both children and dogs. Tricks are ideal, as the dog and child have fun interacting together in an upbeat manner with no pressure. Here is a great article from Theo Stewart on hugs and what can occur. When it comes to touching and interacting with dogs, it's important we not only ask the owner (if the dog is not yours), but then even more importantly, ask the dog. We have created a simple way to teach dogs to let us know whether they want hugs or scratches. Watch our video here. By asking dogs their preference and respecting their wishes, this establishes more positive and safe interactions between humans and dogs. Recognising and identifying dog body language is a big key in understanding whether your dog finds each individual interaction enjoyable.
