ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

Is it OK to feed my dog pumpkin? Is it good for her? How much should I feed her? I love pumpkin and have tons around the house right now. I thought I would cook some up and share it with my dog, Bessie Mae (aka Bessie Mae Moocho, because she loves to give kisses and mooch food).

–Alicia & Bessie Mae

Dear Alicia & Bessie Mae,

Yes, it's fine and even beneficial to feed pumpkin to dogs. Pumpkin is loaded with lots of nutrients and fiber and has quite a few health benefits. It can even help overweight dogs lose weight! But you need to feed it correctly. This article, Is Pumpkin Good for Dogs? will help you learn more about feeding pumpkin to dogs.

BTW. I love your dog's name!

Dear Max,

What's up Max? Hey, you're a Golden, so I figured you could relate and possibly help me out. I am a 5 year old golden retriever and I am constantly itchy! I think I'm driving my humans crazy because I'm always licking and scratching myself. They keep thinking the problem is fleas and putting more flea stuff on me, but it doesn't help! Plus, it's November—don't they know it's too stinking cold for fleas? Please provide your sage advice about what could be making me so miserable so that my humans can help me.

… … … …

Dear Itchy,

Don't despair: I am sure we can get you some relief and I can totally relate. I love to lick my paws and my ears can get really itchy, but my human (Dr. Schelling) gets it under control fast. Unfortunately, I don't know what is causing your intense pruritis (word of the day—it means itchiness). I do know that there can be a variety of reasons and, until you find the cause, the problem can't be fixed.

Here's more information about dealing with canine licking and scratching.

Max's Mini-Reviews

MERRY BONE : This holiday bone toy is ultra soft, so soft I almost don't want to bite it—just kidding! Of course I want to play till I'm too tired to keep my eyes open and then use this plush toy as a cuddle buddy.

CRINKLE CANE : This toy is so cool, instead of a squeaker it crunches when I bite it. I can't get enough! There is something about the sound of the crinkle material inside of the cane that just gets my tail wagging.
